My name is Willie, I have been working with Photoshop since 1993 (version 2.0). I work freelance web development for fluidthoughts.com, and a practicing webmaster. I have also used the Gimp to create images for such e-commerce sites as Jacobsons.com

Freshmeat Description:

"The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, a image format converter, etc."

Install information:

The Gimp has come as part of the standard installation with most Linux distributions (since at least RH 6.0). If this is not the case, then you can download a fresh copy from ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/, and The Gimp website: http://www.gimp.org/.

Background

The Gimp is intended to be a free clone of Photoshop - the industry standard for image manipulation. Anyone who has some experience working with Photoshop should easily be able to pick up the Gimp and get some productive work done. Some of the buttons and commands have subtle differences, though they are rather similar.

This presentation

My intention with this presentation is to introduce a new concept, working with 2-d graphics, to a lot of people. Some of you will have played with the Gimp, some haven't. I hope to help out everyone tonight without going overboard.

Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to play with "script-fu" the powerful method of writing perl scripts to automate image creation. If anyone would be willing to give a demonstration on this, I'm confident there would be an eager audience.
