Getting your feet wet

There are many ways of getting images into the Gimp, or other image editors. This might include downloading a file, or scanning, or even drawing your own.

Getting Started:

Launch the Gimp, some of the first things you may see show up will be the toolbar window. For now, this is where the drop down menus are located. Photoshop users may notice many are missing, but they are still implemented.

One of the easiest ways to get started is to work with an image that already exists. Try downloading one off the internet. Feel free to download one from this page.

Now you can open the file by going to the File menu, and selecting open. From there, you will be able to browse your local drives. This can also be done using a keyboard shortcut. By default, this is set to cntrl-O, but can easily be reset to your preference. I gained most of my desktop experience from using a Mac, so I have all my special keys set to alt-[modifier].

To reset your key commands, you'll need to right click once somewhere in the image area to get the main menu. From there, navigate through the menus until you find the command you're looking for, and then hit the key combination. The shortcut should change before you select the operation.

Also - remember that most of your errors can be corrected by choosing undo. The Gimp will be able to trace back to multiple steps of undo, but can sometimes drop these steps, so save often!
